Emerge Alumnae Win Big on Election Night 2016

Graduates of Emerge Nevada the state’s premier organization for recruiting and training Democratic women to run for office, delivered some big wins in Tuesday’s election. Nine of our organization’s graduates were on the ballot and eight won their races. All seven of our candidates (100%) running for State Legislature won their election, helping return Democratic majority to both houses. Their victories mark a major step forward towards the organization’s goal of seeing more Democratic women elected to political office at all levels of government.

The barriers to entry into the political scene can seem pretty darn imposing to the average citizen, but in a state that has never elected its fair share of women, those barriers can look even more foreboding. Emerge Nevada lowers those barriers and levels the playing field by de-mystifying the process of getting engaged and connecting women to the knowledge and resources needed to win.

The election "Year of the Woman" showed mixed results for female candidates in Nevada.

U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., didn't get to join the record number of women in the U.S. Senate - 20, or one fifth of the body - after losing to U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., on Nov. 6. She would have been Nevada's first female senator since the state's birth in 1864.

On the other hand, U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., did return to Congress to become part of the largest female class in the House of Representatives, or 78 out of 435 members. Titus lost in 2010, but this year won Berkley's House seat for a political comeback.

In all, the 113th U.S. Congress will have a record 98 women, or 18.3 percent of its 535 members.

Sounds good, right? Except women are about half the population, said Erin Bilbray-Kohn, a Democratic National Committeewoman from Nevada who said that doesn't sound like representative government to her.

The first thing you notice about her is her smile. It’s a big smile – really big - warm and inviting. Behind the smile are twinkling brown eyes belonging to a mom, educator, music lover, amateur chef and fashionista with a flair for style.  And tattooed on the inside of her right wrist are the numbers “365”, forever immortalizing the number of electoral votes Barack Obama received in 2008. Meet Zakeisha Steele Jones, whose quiet work behind the scenes is changing the face of our communities.
